Needs assessment and specification – a strong foundation for a successful project
A sorting yard project starts with a needs assessment and definition, identifying the client’s objectives, resources and current challenges. This phase is a clear, cost-effective start (€5,000-12,000) that delivers tangible value to the municipality, regardless of the follow-up. We work with the client to review the logistics, waste management policies, information systems and customer service processes in the area.
Veloop’s expertise extends across a wide range of project management areas. The specification is based on construction quality control, design review and information modelling guidance. Veloop also brings in regulatory and environmental permitting aspects, as well as risk management and safety requirements – providing added value to support the client’s decision-making. An understanding of information systems and their integration capabilities ensures that subsequent solutions are built on a sustainable and compatible foundation.
The needs assessment is not only a sensible starting point, but also a tool for a municipality or company to justify the progress of a project within its own organisation in a clear and informed way.
Controlled design of the sorting yard
The design phase defines the functional solutions, infrastructure requirements and space use of the yard. The aim is to ensure that the yard’s traffic management, customer guidance and waste management processes support smooth operations and efficient use of resources. We use modern design methods and modelling to ensure that the overall design is safe, clear and sustainable in the long term. The design also takes into account municipal and regional targets, environmental impacts and obligations to increase recycling rates.
The Veloop Sorting Yard Needs Assessment starts with a site survey to assess the customer’s waste management needs and options. Based on this, a tailor-made plan is drawn up, including sketch plans and a preliminary cost estimate. The next step is to refine the implementation plan, calculate a more detailed cost estimate and produce a data model of the site, which will help concretise the solution. Finally, we make sure that building permits and other regulatory requirements meet so that implementation can start starts smoothly and on schedule. The result is a waste yard concept that supports supports users’ everyday needs and the municipality’s strategic goals.
Construction management and procurement
Once the plans are finalised in cooperation with the client, we move on to the preparation of the implementation. During the construction phase, we ensure that the site starts in an orderly manner and progresses as planned. The tendering and construction process for the Veloop Sorting Yard starts with the preparation of contract documents based on the approved plans. The works are put out to tender in accordance with the Public Procurement Act and the contract is awarded to the selected contractor.
During construction, we focus on site management and supervision, ensuring that the project is on time and on budget. Our construction team closely monitors the execution, allowing us to react quickly to any deviations and keep costs under control.
At the end of the project, we will organise a site-specific training session and hand over the sorting yard to the customer as a complete system. Documentation, schedule monitoring and quality assurance support a transparent process and ensure a final result that meets the set objectives – a completed and functional sorting yard.
Implementation and deployment of automation
The automation phase will take the services of the sorting yard to a new level. The integration of gates, payment terminals, cameras and sensors will enable seamless self-service and reduce the need for manual work. During commissioning, we ensure that the systems work with the customer’s existing IT systems and that users receive adequate guidance.
The process of implementing automation in the sorting yard starts with a detailed definition and description of the reception process. This is followed by the design of the customer management system and control room functions, and the development of a signage and signage plan to guide customers efficiently and clearly through the area. The automation will also allow real-time data to be collected on waste reception, customer traffic and safety, providing the municipality with the tools to improve operations and meet reporting obligations.
The end result is a ready-to-use sorting yard with a customer experience optimised to improve efficiency and a modern, cost-effective and safe operation.
Remote monitoring center at your service
The remote monitoring center will provide constant visibility in the sorting yard and ensure that users can get help when they need it. Cameras and sensors allow real-time monitoring, and control room operators can direct customers, detect anomalies and ensure safety. Centralised remote monitoring reduces the need for on-site staff and standardises the service experience across sorting yards.
To maintain the surveillance services, we integrated the customer management system and the camera system to ensure that the operation of the sorting yard is equally smooth at all sites. In addition, we provide regular customer visit reporting and liaise with a designated contact person in the form of meetings. This provides valuable information for operational improvement, such as occupancy rates and the smoothness of the customer service processes.
The end result is an easy-to-use, low-staffing sorting yard, where the control functions are outsourced – not just to ensure safety, but to improve ongoing quality and efficiency.
