A new waste transfer and reception hall is to be built in Kittilä, scheduled to open in November. The 1200 square metre steel-framed hall will be built through a new kind of cooperation. Lapeco will procure the entire construction service for the hall from Vestia Oy. Vestia will carry out the construction from start to finish, acting both as consultant and project manager.

“This means that in practice we offer all the services related to the construction of public projects,” says Jarkko Saaranen, a developer at Vestia Oy.

Vestia will provide project management, design guidance, tendering and any necessary assistance in the decision-making process.

“During construction, we are in charge of the project and organise the construction up to the reception and guarantee inspections. It is in the client’s interest that all the threads remain in the same hands from start to finish, and that there are no information gaps,” Saaranen continues.

Uncomplicated and flexible

Lapeco is familiar with construction. Since its creation, the group has been building a functioning waste management infrastructure for its territory from the outset.

“Cooperation with Vestia has been straightforward, flexible and of a high standard. You don’t have to try to solve all your problems with a small organisation, but there is strong expertise available. Our expectation was that Vestia’s construction service would lighten the burden on our own organisation in the construction and implementation of the investment, and this has been well helped,” says Janne Vuolli, Operations Manager at Lapeco.

A sorting yard brings many benefits

Vestia is a familiar partner, as Vestia has carried out the renovation of the eco-ASEMA in Salla for Lapeco. The remotely managed and self-service ecoASEMA has brought cost savings to Lapeco and has garnered positive feedback from residents for its good customer service and extended opening hours. In addition, thanks to improved sorting, waste materials can now be better recycled.

The concept of a sorting yard is therefore expanding in the Lapeco area. In the coming years, Vestia will also implement ecoASEMAS in Ivalo, Kemijärvi, Kittilä and Sodankylä. In addition to Salla, Vestia will provide remote monitoring of all self-service ecoASEMES.

Vuolli praises Vestia’s ability to take Lapeco’s characteristics into account in its construction services.

“The whole service is completely tailored to our needs. Vestia has thought about the operation and services of our stations in a holistic way,” says Vuolli.

Construction service extended

Vestia has already implemented 16 self-service and remote monitoring sorting yards in its own territory. The first site was implemented in 2020, and the concept and service content have been developed based on the data collected and user experience. The implementation of the sorting yards and other waste management development projects have provided Vestia with solid expertise and helped to create operational models for the provision of construction services.

Expert construction services can be easily procured for other waste management construction projects. The transfer hall in Kittilä is the main opening for Vestia in the expansion of its construction services.

“As a waste management company, we are very familiar with the requirements of both the field and the construction and waste legislation. We are able to adapt the service and solutions we offer to the needs of each waste company. The expertise of our staff enables us to carry out virtually any public project, both building and infrastructure construction,” says Saaranen.
